The concept of capturing and storing rainwater for later use is not new.  There are examples dating back as far as Roman times, and many countries are streets ahead of the UK in terms of take-up.  In Germany, systems have been installed since the early 1980s.

The good news is that the UK is catching on quickly.  Installing a rainwater harvesting system can save you money and reduce your environmental impact significantly.

Rainwater harvesting is not to be confused with the recycling of 'grey water' – this refers to the re-use of mains water that has already been used for washing purposes – harvested rainwater does not require chemical or biological treatment and can be left for longer in pipes and tanks. This makes rainwater harvesting systems easier, and cheaper, to implement and operate than grey water systems.
